We are seeking an experienced OHS Lead to join Viking's Safety & Wellness team in Sidney, BC.

As the OHS Lead, reporting to the Director- People & Wellness, you;

  • Impact culture with Senior Leadership team on broad cross-functional OHS system topics.
  • Prevention: Identify hazards and assess risk to health and safety, put appropriate controls in place and provide guidance on accident prevention and occupational health to management and employees. Demonstrate observable and impactful commitment to OH&S Prevention that cascades throughout the organization. Initiate and monitor safety programs, develops policy and procedures, overseas the audit program, liaise with external auditors and plan safety training.
  • Regulatory Requirements: Facilitate programs and practices that will achieve and preserve OSSE Certification.  Monitor compliance with OHS policies, legislative requirements, codes, regulations, practices and procedures and ensure any areas of non-compliance or concern are addressed.
  • Safety Management System (SMS): Establish and ensure operation of SMS that provides for OHS goal setting, planning, and measuring performance of OHS activities and processes by gathering pertinent business, financial, service, and operations information. Identify and evaluate trends and options; choose a course of action; define objectives; evaluate outcomes.
  • Staff Supervision: Manage First Aid Attendants and SafetySync Administrator by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; developing, coordinating, and enforcing systems, policies and procedures
  • Claims Management: Monitor investigation of workers compensation (WSBC) claims.  Assist in the RTW process, creation and maintenance of accurate records relating to the incidents, and assist with coordination of employee services including determining viable solutions for reasonable accommodation. 
  • Budgeting and Financial: Accomplish financial objectives by forecasting requirements; developing annual budget and scheduling expenditures.


  • You have exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to influence without authority to inspire teamwork, confidence and cooperation on our Corporate safety councils.
  • You have the ability to understand, interpret and apply regulations (Canada Labour Code Part II and Workers Compensation Act), agreements and policies; and to maintain confidentiality.
  • You have a minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in OHS leadership with at least 5 of those years at Senior Manager leadership level.
  • You have a Degree, Diploma or Professional Certification in OHS or equivalent; ideally with some post-secondary business education.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing operation (preferably in an aerospace environment).
  • Experience assisting an organization to attain the OSSE Certification will be considered an asset.
  • Experience in developing & implementing Corporate OHS Action Plans, and OHSE program/practice management and validation.
  • You have experience establishing short/mid-term work plans and optimizing resources to ensure OHS objectives (ex., aligned with productivity, quality, costs) are consistently met.
  • Experience with setting and meeting productivity improvement objectives.
  • Management training a plus
  • Training and/or coaching experience a plus
